Iquitos
Almost a half million people call this Amazon city home, making it, perhaps, the largest city in the world not reachable by road. Instead, visitors will arrive by air or boat, as the Amazon River is the largest thoroughfare in the area. This jungle city is a great starting point for visits into the Amazon.
Iquitos Highlights:
The Iron House
Designed by French architect Eiffel, the house was made in France. During the boomtown days of the Rubber industry, it was sent, in pieces, to Iquitos, where it was painstakingly reconstructed. On the corner of the Plaza de Armas, it now contains a café, bar/ restaurant and the British Consul.
Azulejos
These colorful tiles, imported from Portugal, were brought to Iquitos by wealthy rubber barons. Used to decorate their mansions to denote their high standing in society, many old mansions and government buildings still have remnants of the past and are a delight to observe with a leisurely stroll down some of the main thoroughfares.
